Shotokan Karate

The system taught in this school is called Shotokan Karate.This style of karate was developed by Gichin Funakoshi in 1939 and is now one of the most practised styles of karate in the world. There are three main componants in Shotokan training Kihon (basics), blocks, punches, kicks and stances, Kata which are prearanged sets of movements using kihons which allow the student to refine and perfect their tecniques. Kumite (sparring) is the third componant of Shotokan. This is when the student actually applies the techniques against real opponents in a combative setting. At the beginining the students start with one step sparring gradually progressing to free style (jiyu kumite) where any form of punching, kicking and attacking is allowed.
Additionally, the system is enhanced through the western boxing and kick boxing techniques. This gives our system a "free style" karate appearance which is very effective in tournaments as well as for self defence. As the student masters the basics, weapons such as the bo staff, broad sword, dagger, single stick and double sticks are introduced.
Like most martial arts systems one of the primary goals is self defence. A blend of different techniques are taught, standing and on the ground focusing on escapes, locks and submissions. All students have the opportunity to earn a black belt because ranks are based on the development of skills which are independent of age, size or physical stature.



Mr. Fitness has been in operating in North Toronto for over 40 years. Four generations of men, women and children have been members in our gym and or participated in our martial arts and kick boxing programs.
